Israel's Envoy Hails India as Pivotal Strategic Partner Post-Oct 7

Israeli Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, recently affirmed India's emergence as one of Israel's most crucial strategic partners on the global stage. Speaking to JNS, Azar highlighted that this deepening relationship has seen significant acceleration since the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. He specifically noted that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first world leader to call Jerusalem post-attack, expressing solidarity and upholding Israel's right to self-defense, a gesture that underscored the growing bond between the two nations. This proactive support cemented India's unique position in Israel's international relations.

A key factor solidifying this partnership has been India's consistent stance on trade. Unlike many other countries, India did not impose any embargoes or restrictions on trade with Israel following the October 7 events. This steadfastness, coupled with India's rapid economic growth, has led the Israeli government to recognize the enormous potential of India as one of the world's fastest-rising powers. The diplomatic engagement reflects this recognition, with the Israeli Embassy in India hosting seven ministerial visits and receiving two ministerial delegations from New Delhi over the past 18 months, signaling a robust and frequent exchange at high levels.

The strengthening ties culminated in a significant visit by Modi to Israel in February, during which 18 wide-ranging deals were signed. These agreements span several critical areas, including an update in defense cooperation with two expanded scope agreements, and enhanced economic ties through a bilateral investment treaty and various financial sector memorandums of understanding. This comprehensive framework aims to foster sustained collaboration across vital sectors. Looking ahead, Israel is actively working to integrate Indian infrastructure companies into its major development projects, such as the ambitious Greater Tel Aviv Metro system, reflecting a long-term vision for deep economic and strategic integration.

Ambassador Azar underscored India's elevated status in Israel's foreign policy by positioning it as a primary strategic partner. He noted that while the United States remains Israel's major ally and Germany holds special ties and defense relations, India now stands alongside them as a pivotal global collaborator, diversifying Israel's network of strong international relationships and contributing to its security and economic resilience.
